Beware of!

Back in June, I had a need to make available a bunch of game photos to my son's team parents.  I was having DVD burning issues at the time and so went looking for an on-line file hosting service which could handle a large zip file of the photos plus the download bandwidth.  Unfortunately I didn't have a ton of time to investigate and I found one which looked like it would work for me:  Bad decision... even paid for it.

Why a bad decision?  I mean, their Privacy Policy, even today, says:

We will not disclose personally identifiable information we collect from you to third parties without your permission except to the extent necessary including:

  • To fulfill your service requests for services.
  • To protect ourselves from liability,
  • To respond to legal process or comply with law, or
  • In connection with a merger, acquisition, or liquidation of the company.

Hmmmm... no statement allowing for the selling of my email address to third parties.  Just so happens, I am quite skeptical about any on-line service and so I use Yahoo! disposable email addresses and I create a new one each time I sign up with a new service.  I name these disposable addresses in such a way that I can tell if they are selling my email address when I start getting emails unrelated to the service I signed up for.

What happened next?  I have received nearly 50 spam messages to that specific email address.  Now, in the grand scheme of things, given this was in the span of about 3 months, this isn't much.  However, I do not appreciate being lied to and spammers to me rank right there alongside the common criminal.  Now that I am done with my experiment of watching the spam come in, I have canceled my divshare account and deleted my disposable email address!  Bye-bye you scum of the Earth!

So, if you are a follower of this site, or happen to run across this post in your searching for on-line file sharing/hosting services, maybe I will save you some headaches by not giving your information.

Thank you for highlighting this!
You could also try (10gb free public or private storage) - I have a referral link if it is of interest.

I will definitely keep that in mind. I did see your invite a few days ago. I'll hold onto it for when I may need it.

The key for me was not the number of GB total, but the size of the file itself. I just didn't want to have to break it up into several pieces for this particular situation I was in.

We DO NOT sell email accounts. Trust me if we did we would be making way more money than we are. I have no idea how or why you got spammed, but honestly it wasn't from us. We just don't do that.

If we did we could make some serious dollars, after all we have 2.7M registered users, so that would be a very nice mailing list to sell. We don't.

Hopefully you like the service and will use it, and then eventually pay use for a premium account. :-) That's how we make money really.

If you do not sell them, then you were compromised and someone stole that particular email address. I can guarantee you that it was that specific email address and it was only used with my account there. The spams started coming very soon after.

I am not a noob in this space. If I had otherwise been compromised, I would have received spam messages from quite a few other email addresses... but, only received from yours, with not doing anything different than anywhere else.

Thank you for your reply though.
